Madison County held a rally in Comer on Saturday for Democrats up and down the ballot. I couldn’t believe the number of people who showed up to this tiny Georgia town. They had barbecue, music and a number of speakers.
Lexy Doherty, candidate for US Congress: “She’s registered now and she’s planning to vote this November. And that is the power that we all have, that power to connect with people and show them, tell them, that they are not islands, but a member of a big community. Because elections aren’t just something that happens to all of us, this is something that we are doing together. That is the point of this event. Yeah!”
With US Senators Jon Ossoff, Mark Kelly and former Representative Gabby Giffords on the way, people were on their feet and excited. You don’t often see big names like this in rural Georgia.
US Senator Jon Ossoff: “Comer. Madison County. How’re you feeling today? I’m so grateful for each and every one of you who did so much and worked so hard when all the national pundits and all the pollsters and all the political experts said we had no hope and in January of 2021, we sent a message heard round the world when you elected me and Senator Raphael Warnock to the United States Senate. And I want you to remember what they said and how that felt during those crucial months when the whole nation looked to us in Georgia. They said there was no way. “
Member of the crowd: “They didn’t know us!”
Ossoff: “They said there was no way that a Black pastor who holds Dr. King’s pulpit at Ebenezer Baptist Church and the young Jewish son of an immigrant could win in the state of Georgia. They didn’t know Georgia. Because out of no way, we made a way. And the work that you’ve empowered us to do to lift up every community in our state, to fight for rural Georgia, to fight for Georgia farmers and growers, to fight for civil rights and human rights across the state, to fight for veterans has made a profound difference across our state and across the nation. Now listen Madison County. We have a lot of work to do over the next few weeks.”
Member of the crowd: “Yes, we do!”
Ossoff: “The stakes could not be higher. And this isn’t about Democrat versus Republicans, this is about right vs wrong. I don’t need to say much about the man. Former President Trump has demonstrated his unfitness for the highest office in the land. Former President Trump has demonstrated that he lacks the moral fiber and the moral compass to do what is right in the Oval Office. And we are going to have to get out the vote like we have never done it before. We can’t leave it close. There is too much at stake. We have in Vice President Kamala Harris a qualified, determined, capable, prepared woman ready to assume the office of the presidency and to fight for Georgia and every state in the nation.”
Former US Representative Gabby Giffords: “I’ve known the darkest of days. Days of pain and uncertain recovery. But confronted by despair, I’ve summoned hope. Confronted by paralysis, aphasia I responded with grit and determination. I put one foot in front of the other. I found one word, and then I found another. My recovery is a daily fight, but fighting makes me stronger. We are at a crossroads. We can let the shootings continue, or we can act. We can protect our families, our future. We can vote. We can be on the right side of history. Please join us in this fight. Thank you, thank you very much.”
